back-to-school talk
President Obama plans to deliver a back-to-school talk to students on the day after Labor Day.
The White House web site says: “[T]he President will talk directly to students across the country on the importance of taking responsibility for their education, challenging them to set goals and do everything they can to succeed. We want to make sure that as many schools and classrooms nationwide can participate in this special opportunity, so we are making the President’s address and all the information that comes with it available as widely as possible. Whether you are a teacher, a school board member, or a member of the media, [find information here] to help you watch and be engaged with the President in welcoming our students back to school.”
[Update: Here is a link to a prepared text of the president’s speech.]
Since the president announced his plans, many political opponents have raised concerns that the president will take advantage of his talk to millions of students to indoctrinate them to his political views.
Do you think it is appropriate for the president of the United States to deliver a back-to-school address to students?

If we can not allow our President to speak to our students about the importance of education and provide a role model for the results of hard work, then we will have generations of uneducated people who cannot make a successful living in the 21st century.
Those who are not educated can easily be led, and perhaps that is the goal of those who seek to limit free speech.

Yes - the President can give the speech. For goodness sakes, he is the duly elected LEADER of our nation!
