Schoolhouse Beat: The Blog

Divorced from his job

Kent Gramm, a professor at Wheaton College, an evangelical Christian liberal arts school in the suburbs of Chicago, has resigned effective the end of this semester, The New York Times says. Why? He’s getting divorced.

The school has everyone sign an agreement to uphold certain biblical standards of behavior, and divorce for reasons other than adultery and abandonment is grounds for firing. Rather than be fired, Gramm, a professor of English and creative writing, has quit.

From the article:

Dr. Gramm’s departure has thrown into relief a longstanding tension in religious communities like this one: When should those who break the rules be punished, and when should they be forgiven? As students grapple with these questions, they use words like “redemption” and “grace.”

Do you think the college is justified in asking the professor to explain the reasons for his divorce?

Who was it that filed, he or his wife? If it was his wife, he should not be held responsible and be able to continue to instruct. I do not think that any of this should matter. If Gramm is a good prof, what difference does it make whether he is divorced or not? As long as he does not break any of the other rules….

“It should be at the professor’s option.”
