If I had a hammer…
…I’d take it to Las Vegas and get a job in school construction. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that the Clark County (Nev.) district, which consists of Las Vegas and surrounding communities, has just unveiled its projected construction needs through 2018: 73 schools! That’s in addition to the 101 new schools and 11 replacement schools that will have been built by 2010 as part of the previous 10-year construction plan.
For some time now, it seems that many of the throngs of visitors who descend upon Las Vegas have been deciding to stay. And they bring their kids with them. That has made Clark County the fifth-largest district in the nation. It now has nearly 309,000 students, and has doubled its size since 1994. District officials predict the growth will continue, and by 2018, the district will have 473,000 students.
The projected cost of the new facilities plan? $9.5 billion (insert your own high-roller jackpot Las Vegas metaphor here.) If the Clark County board accepts the administration’s proposal, the package will go before voters in November 2008.
