Wayne’s world

Not all the education news in Detroit is gloomy. One of the area’s key community college systems appears to be flourishing, The Detroit Free Press says. A 1.5-mill tax increase six years ago has given the Wayne County (Mich.) Community College District a multimillion-dollar boost. It has seen enrollment nearly quadruple at its five campuses–to 65,435 students in 2006-07 from 17,089 in 2001-02. And infused with the extra cash, the college has expanded its educational programs, improved computer technology, updated classroom and laboratory equipment, repaired and renovated buildings at all its campuses and put up new buildings at two campuses.
